Best Time to Visit Kenya: Month-by-Month Safari Guide

Leer la historia

Wondering when to visit Kenya? Discover the best months for wildlife viewing, the Great Migration, family safaris and quieter adventures, with a month-by-month guide to help you choose the perfect…

Reviewed 8 October 2026 by Norine Forbes Safaris

In this guide

The best time to visit Kenya for a safari is generally between July and October, or during January and February. July to October offers excellent wildlife viewing and the chance to witness the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara, while January and February are particularly rewarding for warm weather, wildlife photography and fewer crowds in many safari destinations.

But here is something many first-time visitors do not realise: Kenya is a year-round safari destination, and the most popular month is not necessarily the best month for you.

Imagine watching a herd of elephants crossing the plains of Amboseli with Mount Kilimanjaro rising in the distance. Or sitting quietly in a safari vehicle as a leopard rests in an acacia tree, with hardly another vehicle in sight.

Neither experience requires you to visit during the Great Migration.

Some travellers want dramatic wildlife encounters. Others dream of peaceful landscapes, luxury lodges, family adventures or a safari followed by a few days on the Indian Ocean coast.

So, when should you actually visit Kenya?

Let us look at what each month offers, which destinations work best during different seasons and how to choose the right time for your Kenya safari.

UNDERSTANDING KENYA'S SAFARI SEASONS

Kenya experiences two main dry periods and two generally wetter periods, although weather patterns vary between regions and from year to year.

JANUARY TO FEBRUARY: WARM AND GENERALLY DRY

Excellent wildlife viewing, beautiful landscapes and rewarding photographic opportunities.

MARCH TO MAY: THE LONG RAINS

Greener landscapes, fewer visitors and potential accommodation savings, although heavy rainfall can affect accessibility.

JUNE TO OCTOBER: THE MAIN DRY SEASON

Excellent wildlife viewing, with the Great Migration generally reaching the Maasai Mara between July and October.

NOVEMBER TO DECEMBER: THE SHORT RAINS

Lush scenery, excellent birdwatching and opportunities for quieter safari experiences.

The important thing to remember is that Kenya's wildlife does not disappear when the rains arrive.

Resident lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras and many other species can be seen throughout the year.

What changes is how easily wildlife can be spotted, where animals gather and the overall atmosphere of your safari.

BEST TIME TO VISIT KENYA: MONTH BY MONTH

JANUARY: EXCELLENT WILDLIFE VIEWING AND BEAUTIFUL WEATHER

January is one of Kenya's most rewarding safari months.

Following the short rains, many landscapes remain green, while generally warmer and drier conditions make game drives enjoyable.

The Maasai Mara continues to offer excellent opportunities to see resident predators, including lions, cheetahs and leopards.

Amboseli is another wonderful option, particularly for travellers hoping to photograph elephants against Mount Kilimanjaro.

January is also attractive for families and couples looking to combine wildlife experiences with a beach holiday.

Best for: Wildlife photography, first-time safaris, Amboseli and safari and beach holidays.

Our recommendation: Consider combining Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and the Maasai Mara for a well-rounded introduction to Kenya.

FEBRUARY: ONE OF KENYA'S MOST UNDERRATED SAFARI MONTHS

If we were recommending a month to someone who wanted excellent wildlife viewing without necessarily travelling during the busiest migration season, February would be high on our list.

Conditions are generally warm and relatively dry across many safari regions.

Wildlife remains active, and shorter vegetation in some areas can make animals easier to spot.

The Maasai Mara is particularly rewarding for big-cat enthusiasts because its resident predators remain in the ecosystem throughout the year.

February can also be an excellent time for Amboseli, Samburu and Laikipia.

Best for: Big cats, photography, couples, families and travellers seeking alternatives to peak migration season.

Our recommendation: February is worth serious consideration if wildlife viewing matters more to you than witnessing the Great Migration.

MARCH: A BEAUTIFUL TRANSITION INTO THE GREEN SEASON

March marks a transition in Kenya's safari calendar.

The beginning of the month can still offer relatively dry conditions, while rainfall generally becomes more likely as the long rains approach.

The landscape begins changing, with fresh vegetation bringing a different character to the national parks and reserves.

Visitor numbers may also begin to decline outside major holiday periods.

For flexible travellers, March can offer an interesting balance between wildlife viewing, scenery and value.

Best for: Flexible travellers, photographers and visitors who prefer quieter safari experiences.

Our recommendation: Consider travelling earlier in March while remaining flexible about changing weather conditions.

APRIL: GREEN LANDSCAPES AND QUIETER SAFARI DESTINATIONS

April is generally among Kenya's wettest months.

Heavy rainfall can affect roads, game drives and access to some remote camps.

However, the rainy season also transforms the landscape.

The Maasai Mara becomes beautifully green, birdlife is abundant and many destinations experience significantly fewer visitors.

Some lodges offer attractive seasonal rates, although others may temporarily close for maintenance or because of difficult access conditions.

Best for: Experienced safari travellers, landscape photographers and visitors comfortable with unpredictable weather.

Our recommendation: Choose accommodation and routes carefully and allow flexibility in your travel plans.

MAY: A DIFFERENT SIDE OF THE AFRICAN WILDERNESS

May typically remains within the long rains period, although conditions vary.

The scenery can be spectacular, with green plains, dramatic skies and excellent opportunities for landscape photography.

For travellers who have already experienced Kenya during the dry season, May offers a completely different perspective.

However, road conditions and lodge availability require careful consideration.

Best for: Repeat safari travellers, photography enthusiasts and visitors prioritising solitude over predictable weather.

Our recommendation: Work with a local safari specialist to identify destinations and lodges operating comfortably during this period.

JUNE: THE BEGINNING OF THE MAIN SAFARI SEASON

June is when Kenya begins transitioning into its main dry-season safari period.

Rainfall generally decreases across many destinations, and wildlife viewing conditions gradually improve as vegetation becomes less dense.

The Maasai Mara is particularly attractive during this period.

Although the timing of the Great Migration varies, June can offer excellent resident wildlife sightings before the busiest migration months.

Best for: Wildlife enthusiasts, first-time safari travellers and visitors seeking a balance between favourable conditions and visitor numbers.

Our recommendation: June is an excellent option for travellers who want a classic Kenya safari without necessarily travelling during peak migration season.

JULY: THE GREAT MIGRATION SEASON BEGINS

July is one of the most anticipated months on Kenya's safari calendar.

Large herds of wildebeest and zebras typically begin arriving in the Maasai Mara from Tanzania's Serengeti, following seasonal rainfall and grazing conditions.

For many travellers, witnessing the Great Migration is a lifelong dream.

However, migration movements are natural and unpredictable.

River crossings cannot be guaranteed on any particular day.

July also marks the beginning of one of Kenya's busiest safari periods, meaning popular lodges and camps may fill well in advance.

Best for: Great Migration enthusiasts, first-time safari travellers and wildlife photographers.

Our recommendation: Book early and consider a private safari that allows greater flexibility during game drives.

AUGUST: PEAK GREAT MIGRATION EXPERIENCES

August is widely regarded as one of the most exciting months for a Maasai Mara safari.

Large wildebeest herds may be present across the ecosystem, and dramatic Mara River crossings are possible.

Predators are also active throughout the reserve.

However, August is generally one of the busiest and most expensive months for accommodation in popular safari areas.

Travellers should expect greater competition for sought-after lodges and increased vehicle activity around major wildlife sightings.

For visitors who prioritise the migration experience, August can be exceptional.

Best for: Great Migration experiences, wildlife photography and first-time migration safaris.

Our recommendation: Reserve your preferred accommodation well in advance and allow several nights in the Maasai Mara to improve your chances of experiencing different wildlife behaviours.

SEPTEMBER: EXCELLENT WILDLIFE VIEWING

September remains an excellent month for visiting Kenya.

Dry conditions generally continue across many safari destinations, and migration herds may still be present in the Maasai Mara.

As some international school holidays end, visitor patterns can begin to change, although the Mara remains popular.

Wildlife often gathers around reliable water sources during the dry season, making game viewing particularly rewarding.

September is also an excellent month to combine the Maasai Mara with Amboseli, Samburu or Laikipia.

Best for: Wildlife photography, the Great Migration and multi-destination safaris.

Our recommendation: September is one of our preferred months for travellers seeking a classic Kenya wildlife experience.

OCTOBER: A REWARDING SHOULDER SEASON SAFARI

October is sometimes overlooked by travellers planning their first Kenya safari, yet it can be an excellent month.

The early part of October may still offer favourable dry-season conditions, while the short rains can begin later in the month.

Some migration herds may remain in the Maasai Mara before moving south towards Tanzania, depending on rainfall patterns.

Importantly, Kenya's resident wildlife remains present regardless of migration movements.

For travellers who want wildlife encounters but are less concerned about witnessing a river crossing, October deserves consideration.

Best for: Wildlife viewing, photography and travellers seeking alternatives to the busiest migration months.

Our recommendation: October can be particularly attractive for visitors who want to combine the Maasai Mara with other Kenyan destinations.

NOVEMBER: GREEN SEASON, BIRDLIFE AND FEWER CROWDS

November usually falls within Kenya's short rains season.

Rainfall often comes in showers rather than continuous rain, although conditions vary.

The landscape becomes greener, and migratory bird species add to Kenya's already impressive birdlife.

Some safari destinations may also feel quieter compared with the peak dry-season months.

For photographers, the combination of fresh vegetation, dramatic skies and wildlife can be especially rewarding.

Best for: Birdwatching, landscape photography, repeat visitors and travellers comfortable with occasional rain.

Our recommendation: November can be a wonderful choice for travellers seeking a quieter and more atmospheric safari experience.

DECEMBER: FESTIVE SAFARIS AND BEACH HOLIDAYS

December brings another change in Kenya's safari calendar.

The short rains may continue into the beginning of the month, while conditions often improve towards the festive period.

Wildlife viewing remains rewarding, and combining a safari with Kenya's Indian Ocean coast becomes particularly attractive.

Families can enjoy game drives in Amboseli, the Maasai Mara or Tsavo before relaxing on the beaches of Diani, Watamu or Mombasa.

Christmas and New Year are popular travel periods, so accommodation prices and availability can reflect festive-season demand.

Best for: Family holidays, couples, festive travel and safari and beach experiences.

Our recommendation: Book festive-season accommodation early, particularly if travelling with children or requiring family rooms.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE THE GREAT MIGRATION IN KENYA?

The Great Migration is generally best experienced in Kenya's Maasai Mara between July and October, although the exact timing changes every year. The migration involves enormous herds of wildebeest, zebras and other grazing animals moving through the Serengeti and Maasai Mara ecosystem in response to rainfall and available pasture.

One of the most famous spectacles is the crossing of the Mara River. But there is something important every traveller should understand. The Great Migration is not a scheduled event. There is no guarantee that a crossing will happen on the day you arrive, or even during a particular game drive. Sometimes herds gather near the river for hours before deciding to cross. At other times, they turn away entirely. This unpredictability is part of what makes the experience extraordinary.

Our advice: If the Great Migration is your main reason for travelling, consider spending at least three or four nights in the Maasai Mara rather than rushing through the reserve. More time gives you greater flexibility to explore different areas and enjoy the resident wildlife, whether or not you witness a crossing.

Explore our Great Migration safari guide for more information.

WHAT IS THE BEST MONTH TO VISIT THE MAASAI MARA?

July to October is generally the most popular period for the Maasai Mara, but January, February and June can also offer excellent wildlife viewing. One of the biggest misconceptions about the Maasai Mara is that it is only worth visiting during the Great Migration. That simply is not true. The reserve supports resident populations of lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, cheetahs and other wildlife throughout the year.

The experience changes with the seasons, but the wildlife remains.

If your dream is to witness the migration, consider July to September.

If you prefer fewer crowds and are particularly interested in big cats, January, February or June may be more suitable. And if you love lush landscapes and photography, the greener months can be surprisingly rewarding.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK?

January to February and June to October are generally excellent periods for visiting Amboseli National Park.

Amboseli is famous for its large elephant herds and spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

During drier periods, wildlife often gathers around the park's permanent swamps and other water sources.

The open landscapes also create wonderful opportunities for wildlife photography.

For travellers hoping to photograph elephants against Kilimanjaro, early morning game drives can be particularly rewarding when the mountain is visible.

However, Kilimanjaro can be obscured by clouds at any time of year.

Amboseli is especially appealing for families, photographers and first-time safari travellers.

For those with more time, combining Amboseli with Lake Nakuru and the Maasai Mara creates a varied Kenya safari experience.

WHAT IS THE CHEAPEST TIME TO VISIT KENYA FOR A SAFARI?

April, May and parts of November can offer better safari accommodation value than the peak migration season, although prices depend on the destination, lodge and travel dates.

Safari costs are influenced by several factors, including accommodation category, park fees, transport arrangements, number of travellers and season.

During July and August, demand for accommodation in the Maasai Mara is particularly high. This can significantly affect the overall cost of a safari.

Travelling outside peak season may allow you to enjoy a higher accommodation category for a similar budget.

However, lower prices should not be the only consideration.

Heavy rainfall can affect access to certain destinations, and some camps close during the wettest months.

A well-planned safari balances value with weather, wildlife interests and overall comfort.

At Norine Forbes Safaris, we can help travellers compare different travel periods and accommodation options before deciding on an itinerary.

IS IT BETTER TO VISIT KENYA DURING THE DRY SEASON OR RAINY SEASON?

That depends on what you want from your safari.

Choose the dry season if you prioritise:

• Easier wildlife viewing in many destinations

• Generally more predictable game-drive conditions

• Great Migration opportunities during the relevant months

• Classic golden savannah landscapes

Consider the green season if you prefer:

• Lush scenery and dramatic photography

• Fewer visitors in some safari areas

• Excellent birdwatching

• Potentially better accommodation value

• A quieter and more relaxed atmosphere

Neither season guarantees wildlife sightings, and neither should be dismissed entirely.

The best choice depends on your interests.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME FOR A KENYA SAFARI AND BEACH HOLIDAY?

January to March and parts of July to October can work particularly well for combining a Kenya safari with a beach holiday, depending on your preferred coastal destination and activities.

One of Kenya's greatest advantages is how easily a wildlife safari can be combined with time beside the Indian Ocean.

Imagine spending several days tracking elephants and lions before exchanging your safari boots for sandals on the white-sand beaches of Diani.

Or explore Tsavo before continuing to the coast for a few days of relaxation.

MAASAI MARA + DIANI BEACH

A classic combination of exceptional wildlife viewing and coastal relaxation.

AMBOSELI + TSAVO + DIANI BEACH

An excellent road safari combining elephant country, dramatic wilderness and the Indian Ocean.

NAIROBI + MAASAI MARA + WATAMU

A varied journey featuring city experiences, safari adventures and a quieter coastal escape.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD YOU BOOK A KENYA SAFARI?

For travel during the Great Migration season, particularly July to September, booking six to twelve months in advance is advisable when possible.

Popular lodges and camps can fill quickly, especially those in sought-after locations.

For other periods, shorter booking windows may be possible, depending on availability.

Families, larger groups and travellers seeking specific luxury properties should generally plan further ahead.

Booking early also gives you more flexibility when choosing accommodation, safari routes and preferred travel dates.
